Training & Certifications (PADI/CMAS) in French Polynesia
Dive centers in Polynesia offer all internationally recognized certifications:
- Open Water Diver (first level for diving independently to a depth of 18 m)
- Advanced Open Water (to descend to 30 m and explore more technical sites)
- Rescue Diver (learn to manage safety and progress even further)
- Specialized training (drift diving, deep diving, photography, nitrox, etc.)
The CMAS system, which is widely used in Europe, particularly in France, is based on a star system:
- One-Star Diver (CMAS 1)*
- Equivalent to Open Water (PADI/SSI)
- Accessible from age 14
- Allows diving to a depth of 20 m accompanied by an instructor.
- Ideal for beginners in the calm lagoons of Tahiti, Moorea, or Bora Bora.
- Two-Star Diver (CMAS 2)*
- Equivalent to Advanced Open Water (PADI/SSI)
- Allows diving to a depth of 40 m, in pairs independently in the 20 m zone, and supervised beyond that depth.
- Recommended for exploring the spectacular passes of the Tuamotu Islands (Rangiroa, Fakarava).
- Three-Star Diver (CMAS 3)*
- Confirmed level, allowing you to supervise less experienced divers.
- Provides total autonomy up to 60 m (depending on local regulations and conditions).
- Suitable for experienced divers who wish to dive without a guide or in technical conditions.
Equivalencies with SSI and PADI
• CMAS 1 = Open Water Diver (PADI/SSI)*
• CMAS 2 = Advanced Open Water (PADI/SSI)*
• CMAS 3 = Divemaster (PADI/SSI)*
Whether you choose CMAS, SSI, or PADI, the standards are respected and the local instructors will guide you with professionalism and passion.
If you want to start your training in Polynesia, we recommend doing so in Tahiti, staying for several days to complete your first level of training in the calm waters of the Tahiti lagoon.
