Fatu Hiva
Fatu Hiva is an extreme island : the most southern, the wettest, the lushest…
This real wild paradise of an extraordinary beauty is characterized by vertiginous reliefs and luxuriant vegetation. The two peaceful villages of Omoa and Hanavavae are linked by just one road that can be taken by 4×4, by horse or by foot.
The unforgettable eleven mile road to the magnificent “Bay of Virgins” so called because the contours of surrounding relief take on feminine shapes is one ot the most beautiful sights in the world.
This is the island of tapa cloth where plant fibers are transformed into fabric whose drawings are often inspired by the anscestral marquisien’s tattoos. It’s traditionally the “mama” task to paint those “tapa”, but they also make “umuhei”, perfumed flower crowns which impregnate the hair with their sumptuous aromas and are said to have aphrodisica properties. The monoi in sandal wood is also made here.
Fatu Hiva is probably the most remote and the most authentic of the Marquesas…
